Thirty years ago, the plague took its first victim: a regular man in Snowflake, Arizona, whose mind was poisoned by the A-42. He withered away into a twitching husk of hide and sinew, gauging out his own eyes — and in just hours, flipped into the rabid, mouth-frothing beast known now as the Muted. 

Today, the Muted are everywhere, and Earth isn't safe anymore. In a last-ditch effort to save humankind, what's left of the United Nations pools their resources together to launch a ship into space. Aboard it is Earth's last hope: super soldiers who have been genetically modified to have the upper-hand against the Muted. 

Ever since Eos Europa was created eighteen years ago, she has obsessed over the day she'll deploy to Earth and defend its remains with a blood-slick knife in her hand and a halo of Mute corpses fanned out at her feet. But when her genetic coding goes awry — leaving her without the powers necessary to deploy to Earth — it looks like her dreams of Mute-slaying grandeur are over. That is, until other soldiers start disappearing just seconds after reaching Earth's surface without explanation.
